The new 1:1 Architects newsletter - a short quarterly email update on some of our most recent projects and works in progress.

It´s no time to pull the sheet over one´s head and hide from the coming winter, 1:1 is steaming along with some new exciting projects in 2010, whilst others reach completion.!

How did this project differ from a generic ALDI Store?
As was the intention of the Flat Roof generic design for ALDI, elements of the design could be taken and adapted or expanded upon.

The building uses the combination of ribbed pre-cast panels, trespa & FC sheet lining with highlight windows to produce a new building form. The painted pre-cast panel pierces the canopy to form a peak. The roof then slopes down to the entry as focal point.

Did the project achieve what it set out to?
On April 15th the ALDI Store opened in Echuca to much anticipation. The vacant school was removed except for the 1919 building which has had an external facelift.

The non-standard ALDI design store has provided a modern icon within the town centre. The form and colour sit well within their surroundings, yet not overwhelming the neighbouring heritage buildings.

The layout of the site allows easy access and movement for both traffic and pedestrians.

The forecourt provides a visual disconnection to the existing building as well as open passage space, inviting people from the nearby town centre shopping street to enter the store.

What was the brief for this project?
The brief was to provide 2 unit and demo kitchen to the basement with the possibility to extend the ground level by adding a coffee academy. A kitchen and restaurant extension for 120 guests was requested on the upper level.

Did the client have any specific or unusual requests?
A high standard of kitchen equipment was required for all training kitchens and restaurant kitchen. The demo kitchens are equipped with an end of the line AV system.

What difficulties has the project encountered so far?
We have to deal with delays of the construction program due to substantial asbestos removal. These expensive but necessary works will put pressure on the budget too.

1:1 Architects are currently undertaking a pro bono job for the St Kilda Youth Services (SKYS) Learning Centre. An Hospitality Education and Training program (HEAT) is run by SKYS at their Pickles St facility. SKYS were looking to upgrade their existing kitchen and general training facilities. We offered our services to help with the re-design and documentation which also included a new bar-training area, upgraded bathroom facilities and new carpets throughout.

A number of companies have also donated services and products to SKYS. InterfaceFLOR donated boxes of carpet tiles, William Angliss Institute donated many pieces of pre­loved kitchen equipment after their own recent upgrade works, and the builders ­ Stosius & Staff Constructions ­ provided a very competitive tender. Lehr Consultants International and BSGM also offered their services pro-bono for this project.

Work started on site in February this year and is on-track to be completed at the end of April. There were standard issues that arose for this project in regards to heritage buildings and bringing them into line with currently accessibility codes and guidelines. All parties have worked well together to ensure the best outcome possible for the disadvantaged youths of that rely on the SKYS learning centre.
