1.1: OVERVIEW

A message from the Director, David Nock.

It has been a busy hiatus since our last newsletter. 2010 was a dynamic year for 1:1 Architects. We spent most of it collaborating with designer Grant Cheyne for the design and documentation of three major projects; Spice Temple and Rockpool Perth restaurants and The Waiting Room bar. The hospitality school at Victoria University was also completed early this year. It has been an intense, fertile time for us, both professionally as showcased in the proceeding newsletter entries, but also personally. We have had births, engagements, new art pieces, plants and team members to add to the 1:1 collection.

We hope 2011 will continue along the same energetic and enthusiatic path.

Perth Rockpool Restaurant

How did you experience this project given you were based in Melbourne?

With the level of finesse demanded in a restaurant development of Rockpool’s class, an architect could be forgiven for pre-empting a plethora of agonising issues from go to woe.  Not so, in this case!  With a down-to-earth and highly knowledgeable crew in the Burswood management team, primarily on-the-ball consultants and our own architectural wiz (Peter Hobbs) keeping everything ticking along on the ground in Perth, it was largely a productive, cooperative and satisfying process through until the first Wagyu ascended the grill.

With a multitude of glass types, fabrics, stone, metals and timbers, there was no shortage of detail resolution along the way.  The Lavastone for our joinery was treated to some rough seas en route from Italy but thankfully only one casualty.  With Grant Cheyne’s highly refined design sensibility and a craftsman-like joiner on board, the finer details were to maketh the restaurant.
